You just got your hands on DCommander – now what? One of the first things you should do is to customize it to your needs as much as possible.

In this tutorial we will begin with file list, customizing the columns. Once DCommander is open, right-click (or if unavailable, Control+click) on the column headers in the file list. You'll be presented with a menu similar to this:

Here you can toggle the columns you want to see or hide. Don't forget that you can always resize and reorder the columns as you please. To reorder columns, simply click+drag on any of the columns, like this:

Another thing you can change is the horizontal width of each file list. Click and drag the mouse cursor on the middle separator to change the width of both file lists. To reset the width of both file lists, double-click on the separator.

Here is a different configuration of DCommander using just the instructions above:

Next we'll customize the look of the file lists. To do this, you'll need to open the DCommander Preferences window. Either press COMMAND + , at the same time or in the top menubar click DCommander -> Preferences. Here click on the Display tab. You'll should see something like this:

Here you can change the size of each row in the file list, as well as the font (text typography) used. You also have a few pre-defined color themes you can choose. If none of the preset color themes are to your liking, you can always create your own theme using the color selectors. Below the Font and Colors section you'll see more options to customize the file lists, including grid lines, focus rings, bold texts for folders and more.

File lists are the core of DCommander. Make sure you are completely comfortable using them and that they have a pleasant visual look.
